THE HISTORY OF CINCO DE MAYO

Cinco De Mayo History

Cinco de Mayo, which means "fifth of May" in Spanish, commemorates the Mexican army's victory over the French army at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. This battle was part of the Franco-Mexican War, which began in 1861 when Mexico declared a temporary moratorium on the repayment of foreign debts, including those owed to France.

At the time, Mexico was facing financial difficulties and political instability, and French Emperor Napoleon III saw an opportunity to establish a French presence in Mexico and take advantage of Mexico's weakened state. In late 1861, a French army of 6,000 soldiers, led by General Charles Latrille de Lorencez, landed in Veracruz, Mexico, and marched toward Mexico City.

On May 5, 1862, a Mexican army of about 4,500 soldiers, commanded by General Ignacio Zaragoza, met the French army at the town of Puebla. Despite being outnumbered and outgunned, the Mexican army, made up mostly of indigenous and mestizo soldiers, was able to defeat the French army in a decisive battle.

The victory at the Battle of Puebla was a significant morale boost for the Mexican army and people, and it helped to unite and inspire Mexicans to resist French occupation. However, the French were not deterred by their defeat and eventually captured Mexico City in 1863, establishing the Second Mexican Empire with Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian of Austria as its emperor.

While Cinco de Mayo is an important day in Mexican history, it is not a major holiday in Mexico. In the United States, however, Cinco de Mayo has become a widely celebrated holiday, particularly in areas with large Mexican-American populations, and is often associated with Mexican culture and heritage.
